Stephen Leyhe (GER) takes flight during Official Ski Jump Training at night where he finished in first place with a distance of 130.5metres. This image was taken on February 14th 2018 at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre on Day 5 of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics 2018. I climbed up the jumping slope to approximately 30 metres from the jump edge to ensure I could capture the back view of the athlete as he jumped down the hill. The image was shot at 1/10th second as I zoomed in to the athlete as he got further away to create the zoom blur whilst maintaining focus and composition on the athlete to emphasise the speed and direction he was flying. To ensure correct exposure I decreased exposure compensation by one third due to the lighting on the ski jump. These athletes travel at incredible speed and requires tremendous courage to leap in to the void as they are unable to see the slope until they are in the air, hence the image title I have selected.
