Camlica Mosque, Istanbul
Nikon D750, 20-700mm f2.8
Taken after Friday prayers in the courtyard of the largest mosque in Istanbul, the Camlica, I wanted to capture the 'spirit' of the setting through the expression of freedom of movement, along with natural beauty. Unknown to many, the mosque was designed by female architects, so was an apt setting to make a statement with our female model for the day. She was Nottingham's Aaliyah, who is a British influencer of Pakistani heritage, I myself am British of Bangladeshi descent, the designer was French-Turkish now based in London, celebrating a creative diverse collaboration. , I wanted to present the dress in an innovative, free flowing way, using natural lighting, waiting for the sun movement to be less harsh yet sufficient to highlight the flow of the fabric, reflecting off the light stone setting. Aaliyah's pose and expression projects the positive image of a Muslim female in a modern setting, wearing a beautiful dress which draws on heritage.. Modest fashion in a mosque, not your typical architectural image of a mosque. Playing with perspective, it's hard to tell Aaliyah is under five foot in height given the flow of the dress and angle which I took the photo! All in all, am pleased to present a powerful, unique image capturing faith, fashion, creativity and diversity - through the lens, in a split second, that's the spirit and beauty of photography.
