This image was taken as part of the first year of my Photography BA hons degree. The brief was to take a portrait of someone with something on their head that wasn't a hat. I studied some painted portraits for inspiration and really liked the portrait of Anne Boleyn hanging in the National Portrait Gallery in London. Anne Boleyn was one of the most powerful, influential women in British history and i wanted to show the image wIthin the context of Gender Equality in 2019. I used a car air filter cut to size in place of the Head piece in the original portrait, and dressed the sitter as a car mechanic, still a predominantly male dominated industry. I included the quote "Le Temps Viendra" (The time Will come) written on a name tag on the uniform. Anne inscribed these words into her Book of Hours just before her execution. Jenny the Sitter is a work colleague of mine and has never sat for a portrait before,. Jenny is a very thoughtful, intellegent and kind person, always putting others before herself, I felt she was perfect for the portrait. I feel the lighting is also key to this portrait. I used two Bowen's lights on the back ground with layered green gels to give a dark background. reminiscent of the original painting. The image was shot at 1/125 at F11 Jenny is lit with a single Bowens light and soft box with a reflector. I have spent a lot of time trying to develop this photograph into a series, but have been unhappy with the results so far. I start the second year of my photography degree in September 2019 and one of my priorities will be to develop this series.
